Oh HELL no. @ 11:17 pm

I feel: infuriated furious

Of course, the Bush administration is running some last-minute bullshit to further hinder reproductive freedom in this country. Hospitals and clinics are no longer required to provide all relevant, essential information about birth control, emergency contraception, abortion, etc. to patients, and further are not allowed to deny employment to doctors/nurses/etc. who withhold treatment and information based on their "personal beliefs."

As Cristina Page articulated in How the Pro-Choice Movement Saved America, the anti-choice conservatives are not in this to selflessly "save babies" by reducing abortions as they claim, but to dictate and mandate their religious beliefs, limit sexual freedom, and keep women in their "proper," reproductively subservient place.

Friends, America is not saved yet. I just signed this petition to the Obama administration to overturn these ridiculous and misogynistic policies. Please check it out and sign it if you agree:

In other sad and less national news. The courts recently overturned one of the few things Blago did right in IL. Pharmacists can once again deny birth control and EC to patients if it conflicts with their morals/ religious beliefs.

i will NEVER understand why it's ok to not do the job you trained for and chose because of your own moral beliefs. you know as a pharmacist that you will have women who want birth control.

either do it or quit your damn job.

this is so sad :(

I agree. I don't get it. Had I stayed in teaching I wouldn't have the option to not teach "classic literature " because my morals don't align with the central themes of the novel. I would be fired or at minimum, disciplined by the school board. (I was trying to come up with a more specific example, but I'm drawing a complete blank right now.)

that was a great example!

i'm a social worker and i work with people with severe mental illness. so many of them make choices or say things that i firmly disagree wtih but it's not my place to intervene or tell them it's wrong. the whole model in social work right now is "recovery" which is basically "let the client make their own choices even if you think it's a mistake."

why does this concept not apply to all positions??!

This is something that frustrates me to no end. Going into a profession like medicine, where people put their trust in you to provide them with ACCURATE and COMPLETE medical information, gives you an ethical and I would say even moral imperative to do so. If you don't agree, DON'T BECOME A FUCKING DOCTOR.

I am preaching/screaming to the choir; I am just so furious about this.

It seems to me that law or no law with holding complete and accurate information in regards to ANYTHING would be a major violation of the Hippocratic Oath. Providing incomplete and inaccurate information flies in the face of the concept of doing what's best of the patient because it takes away that patients ability to decide what is actually best for them. I may not be a doctor, but when present with all my options, I'm the only one who can figure out what's best for me.

It also seems like a great way to open yourself up to medical malpractice suits. (This is the "Hey I work in insurance now" view.) I'm not one of those "lawsuit happy" people, and I think doctors get sued unnecessarily often because people know they have to have med mal insurance to even maintain their license. However, you can be damn sure that if I ever ended up in a situation as a result of a doctors failure to give me complete information regarding my medical options (and I'm not just talking about BC/ abortion here), I would be suing their pants off. You're right; it is a huge ethical violation, and honestly, it's insulting to the patient. It's the implication that your morals are superior and you know better than they do.

I tried to have a conversation with some friends yesterday about how I don't think it's right for medical professionals to be allowed to deny medication and procedures based on their personal beliefs. None of them agreed with me, which I thought was strange.

And this makes it legal to even deny INFORMATION to women about their options. This assholes are SO SO afraid of feminine sexuality that they have to fucking LIE and MISLEAD women in dire straits who have come to them for help, instead of providing them with information and letting them have a say in their treatment.

Thank you for posting about this! I signed the petition and have been working hard to tell everyone I know about this bullshit.

It's utter crap, and I hope that Obama overturns this as quickly as possible.

Thanks so much!! I'm sending it to my entire sociology department, I'm thinking it will spread like wildfire.

I will lose a lot of faith in Obama if he doesn't take swift action on this. But I have a feeling Michelle will kick his ass if he drags his feet. :)

Johhny's tired of being angry. I had a longer response in mind, but that's the short of it.

*Raises Hand* Hi, my name is Matt and I'm one of those gosh darn "anti-choice conservatives." But I'm not your average pro-lifer! Also, I'm a medical student, which just makes it sweeter. Aren't you dying to hear what I have to say? Muahahaha. (Love ya cuz!)

I haven't had time (I know, always my excuse) to read up on this yet. You say this makes it so clinics etc don't have to provide information on all alternatives currently legally available to pregnant women? If so, I find that absurd and even criminal. As a medical professional, especially in the modern era where the doctor-patient relationship is so keenly seen as a partnership, with the doctor as a consultant rather than a governor, full disclosure of relevant information is essential.

I agree with whoever above said, if you don't want to have to do it, stay out of the profession. My view is that every abortion is the taking of a life. Though I'm going to be a doctor, I plan to stay FAR out of that territory, simply because I don't want to have to deal with the ethical issues about that (currently considering oncology, if anyone cares).

However, even if I, who thinks (I'd say "realizes" but I don't want to be inflammatory...) that life begins at conception, was in a situation where a patient was asking me about various alternatives, I would present all information as fully and clearly as possible, and I'd *try* to remain as unbiased as possible.

Of course, I wish pro-abortion people would try to extend the same courtesy (I realize that some do). I've read that a staggering number of women regret their decision to have an abortion. I think the medical community has an obligation to at the very least, present ALL options clearly to the woman (and I'd go so far as to say that an ultrasound should at least be offerred), and information on how many women regret their decision should be offerred.

I'd say more, but I don't have time and you probably don't care THAT much. To sum it up, abortion takes a life, but the medical community also has an OBLIGATION to disseminate information in a thorough and complete manner. For a full essay on my feelings on abortion, stay tuned to www.doctormattsmusings.blogspot.com, and I will (eventually) write one :)
